Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
